The waterfront dispute of 1998 dominated the news for six months, and was Australia's most significant industrial confrontation for many years. The implications of the conflict were as much polictical as they were industrial. Had Patrick's attempt to deunionise its workforce provded sucessful it is likely that industrial relations in Australia would have changed significantly. In the event, the Federal Court instructed Patrick's to reinstate in original workforce, the non-unionised workforce was dismissed and pursued a class action aganist its former employers.
