Collection statement of significance
The Jon Belmonte collection no. 2 comprises of clothing, documents and paper based material that relate to Belmonte's experiences as a member of the Fynwest and later PCS trained workforce during the 1998 waterfront dispute.
The waterfront dispute of 1998 dominated the news for six months, and was Australia's most significant industrial confrontation for many years. The dispute centered on an attempt by Patrick's Stevedores - in collaboration with the Federal Government and the National Farmers Federation - to replace its entire workforce of 1,400 men with a much smaller specially trained non-unionised workforce. The implications of the conflict were as much polictical as they were industrial. Had Patrick's attempt to deunionise its workforce provded sucessful it is likely that industrial relations in Australia would have changed significantly. In the event, the Federal Court instructed Patrick's to reinstate in original workforce, the non-unionised workforce was dismissed and pursued a class action aganist its former employers. The Belmonte collection no. 2 is of high cultural significance in that relates to one person's involvement throughout the entire dispute.
