DPCU - Disruptive Pattern Combat Uniform
Image

DPDU - Disruptive Pattern Desert Uniform
DPDU Series 1
Image
The first series DPDU (Disruptive Pattern Desert Uniform) was based on the already well known Australian DPCU (Disruptive Pattern Combat Uniform) aka 'Auscam' camouflage pattern, but with only three colours instead of the initial five, and taking up only one third of the DPCU pattern space. The base was in a khaki/ sand colour with an overlay of a light green/ grey and chocolate brown. This pattern was short lived and was issued on initial deployment of SASR and support elements to Afghanistan. Approximate issue dates were late 2001 to early/ mid 2002. Examples of this camouflage are now extremely rare. This is pattern should not to be confused with the misinformed rumours of the first series DPDU being based on a “neutralised pink” background 'so ugly' it was refused by the SASR itself. There is no such thing as ‘neutalised pink’!! as purported on a well known web sight about camouflage uniforms. I believe this misnomer to have originated from the use of so called 'red Auscam' which was used by SASR elements playing Opposition Forces (OPFORs) during exercises in Australia’s semi-arid Northern regions. But more about red Auscam later.

DPDU Series 2

With initial feedback suggesting the series 1 DPDU pattern was 'too light' in colouring the Series 2 DPDU reverted to the 5 colour pattern of the original Australian DPCU. The base colour changed to a creamy/ white colour with an overlay of two grey shades, a light olive green and the same chocolate brown as used in the series 1 pattern camouflage. This pattern was issued around mid 2002 to early 2003. It was used in Afghanistan by SASR and support elements from both Army and RAAF units. I have also heard it may have been used by Australian Forces in the International MFO, Sinai. I have yet to confirm this.

DPDU Series 3

With the commitment of Australian troops to the so called 'Coalition of the Willing' and its invasion of Iraq in 2003, the differing desert terrain caused the latest change in DPDU. It is supposedly more versatile in its arid desert colourings. The basic pattern remains the original Australian 5 colour pattern with a new variation in the colours. The base returns to a more yellow version of the Series 1 DPDU and the olive green is replaced by another shade of grey. The chocolate brown remains unchanged in this pattern. This pattern has been issued since mid 2003 to ADF (Australian Defence Force) troops serving in Afghanistan, Iraq, The Sinai, and during the assistance operation after the Pakistani Earthquakes. There is, as some collector/ dealers who should know better will deny, NO SUCH THING as a series 4 DPDU. The series relates to the cam pattern, not the cut of the uniform. The current cut is in series 3 DPDU, and is known as the Land 125, after the tender issued by the D^D. Be wary of anyone trying to unload anything they term series 4 DPDU, or any DPDU in ripstop material. This material appears to be a 'made in China' commercial variant of substandard quality.

Multicam
Image
