Newest Unit: the Special Operations Engineer Regiment
Image
On Friday 24 February 2012 the Chief of Army, Lieutenant General David Morrison announced the raising of the newest unit in the Australian Army, the Special Operation Engineer Regiment (SOER).

Formerly known as the Incident Response Regiment (IRR), the decision to name the new unit the Special Operations Engineer Regiment has come about to reflect the evolution of capability and maturity of the unit beyond that of incident response.

“The new unit reflects the distinct roles and capabilities of the SOER, whilst still retaining ties to the Corps of Royal Australian Engineers,” said LTGEN Morrison.

Lieutenant Colonel Scott Corrigan, Commanding Officer of the SOER said,
“The Regiment has grown to provide agile and highly trained teams that provide integrated, rapidly deployable and specialised capability to enable Special Operations.”

“These include neutralising Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear or Explosive (CBRNE) threats, as well as mobility and survivability capabilities.”

The SOER is able to respond both domestically and in support of Australian forces deployed overseas in high threat environments.

As a rapid response organisation, elements of the Regiment are maintained on short notices to move to incident sites at all times.

The motto of Special Operations Engineer Regiment is 'Inter Hasta Et Hostes', which is Latin for ‘Between Spears and Enemies’.

Australia ready to lead ISAF team in Uruzgan

The Australian Defence Force is poised to assume command responsibilities for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Uruzgan province, Afghanistan, following a final mission rehearsal exercise at Robertson Barracks in Darwin this week.

The incoming commander of ISAF forces in Uruzgan, Colonel Simon Stuart, said the training exercise, which concluded yesterday, marked the end of preparations for the transfer of command responsibilities in Uruzgan from the United States of America to Australia.

“Over the past two weeks we have finalised our extensive training, together with our US Army counter-parts from the 2nd ‘Spartan’ Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry Division, who will form the joint headquarters of Combined Team Uruzgan,” Colonel Stuart said.

“This is an important time for ISAF operations in Uruzgan as governance, development and security responsibilities are being handed over to the Afghan Government.

“It is a great honour for a non-NATO country to be leading Combined Team Uruzgan during this period.”

As well as the deploying Australian and US contingent, Australian Government personnel from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, AusAID, Australian Federal Police and representatives from the US Embassy also took part in the training exercise.

Colonel Jake Ellwood, Commander of the Combat Training Centre, which conducted the exercise, said it was an extensive undertaking to test the combined headquarters.

“The training involved complex scenarios that replicate the contemporary operational environment in Uruzgan and reflect the responsibilities of the combined headquarters, including advising the Afghan National Security Forces, managing infrastructure projects, and enhancing governance within the province,” Colonel Ellwood said.

Personnel from the 7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment Task Group (7 RAR Task Group) also took part in the training in preparation for their replacing the currently deployed 3 RAR Task Group.

As Australia shifts its focus from mentoring to advising, the 7 RAR Task Group will continue the work of the 3 RAR Task Group, advising the 4th Brigade, Afghan National Army as it continues to develop its capabilities.

The training exercise was also supported by more than 100 staff from across the Australian Defence Force who coached and mentored the soon-to-deploy force and tested the soldiers’ preparation in dealing with tribal, cultural and language challenges.

Commander 1st Brigade Brigadier Gus McLachlan said the training exercise was a key component of the pre-deployment preparations for the contingent.

Brigadier McLachlan said the presence of US Army staff was evidence of the added responsibility that the Australian-led contingent would carry in Uruzgan.

“The exciting aspect of this deployment is that it will be the first time that Australia has led the combined force in Uruzgan,” Brigadier McLachlan said.

“It is a proud opportunity for Australia and the Australian Army to showcase its professionalism.

“I am particularly pleased the Army’s 1st Brigade will fly the flag in Uruzgan while we remain unified in our purpose to help the representatives of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan bring a better quality of life to the people of the province.”

Thales Debuts New Assault Rifle – The F90

Tue, 12/06/2012 - 01:23
Thales has debuted its new F90 assault rifle at this year’s Eurosatory exhibition in Paris, France.

Building on the company’s extensive Australian expertise in small arms, the F90 is evolved from a battle-proven weapon that has been in service in Australia and 30 other countries for over two decades. The bullpup design enables a longer barrel and associated higher muzzle velocity for greater stopping power within a compact overall length.

The F90’s open architecture incorporates a NATO tri-rail system and optional NATO magazines, while a growth path allows for the fitting of centralised power, as well as data and powered rails. The weapon also includes an integrated side-loading 40mm grenade launcher that can be attached in just a few seconds by the soldier.

The F90 is identical to the EF88-designated weapon currently being developed by the company for Australia’s LAND 125 program, and is based on the F88 platform that has been in service and evolved in Australia since the late 1980s. The weapon will be available in five variants: F90; F90(G) (grenade launcher variant); F90M (’Marksman’ variant with a longer barrel); F90M(G) and F90CQB (Close Quarters Battle – a carbine). The Marksman variant is the same length as Australia’s in-service F88SA2, but is over 0.5kg lighter, while the equivalent grenadier variant is over 1.6kg lighter. The rifle variant weighs just 3.25kg, has high levels of reliability and rapid target acquisition time.

Thales is in cooperation with Austrian company Steyr Mannlicher to pursue specific opportunities, such as the French DGA FAMAS replacement project, utilising Steyr Mannlicher’s manufacturing experience and facilities.

COMMANDOS TO BE RECOGNISED FOR HISTORIC AFGHAN BATTLE
By Defence correspondent Michael Brissenden, ABC
Updated May 10, 2013, 9:37 am

Australian special forces troops will be honoured for their involvement in one of the most significant battles of the Afghan War in Perth today.

On June 10, 2010, Sergeant Gary Robinson was in a sniper position in the valley around the insurgent stronghold of Chernatu.Â

By all accounts, Sergeant Robinson fired the first shot in what is likely to be remembered as the most significant battle of Australian forces in Afghanistan – the Battle of Shah Wali Kot.

The thing he remembers most about that day was the heat. It was 55 degrees Celsius. Others among the 100 commandos deployed that day remember the noise of the machine guns and the rockets.

We already know a lot about the bravery of SAS Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith, who was awarded a Victoria Cross for his valour on that day. Twelve other individual citations were awarded, including a Star of Gallantry.Â

Now the whole Task Group is set to receive the first overarching battle honour awarded since the Vietnam War.

The Chief of Army will present the battle honour of Eastern Shah Wali Kot to the SAS today, while the Governor-General will present the battle honour to the 2nd Commando Regiment on June 19.

The two-day battle that began on June 10 came after months of careful planning and so much consultation with locals that the military planners had "tea pouring out of their eyes".Â

According to the Defence citation supporting document, the talking was followed throughout May by "a series of daring daylight helicopter raids deep into enemy territory designed to destabilise the local insurgent networks and to identify and draw in as many of the regions Taliban's commanders as possible".

That day, Alpha Company commando group moved in to establish attack positions inside the area used as a Taliban supply route to Kandahar.Â

Just after dawn, they found themselves surrounded by the enemy. They spent most of the day under sustained and heavy attack but eventually forced the insurgents to retreat to the nearby village of Tizak.

The next day a troop from the 2nd Squadron SAS was deployed by helicopter around Tizak on a kill or capture mission to hunt down the Taliban and their leaders; they were outnumbered four to one and immediately met fierce resistance.

According to the operation's commander, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Burns: "All they could do was crawl into a position so they didn't die – the amount of time the guys said: 'I was digging a hole with my eyelids' articulates the environment they were in".

Eventually, though, the SAS troops did manage to overrun the enemy machine gun positions and force a retreat of the Taliban from the region.

A significant number of fighters, and, more importantly, Taliban commanders were killed.Â

In fact, so many commanders were killed that according to General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) at the time, the impact was felt across Afghanistan.

The battle of Shah Wali Kot is now set to become part of Australian military legend. It will sit in the Afghanistan campaign much as the Battle of Long Tan resonates through the conflict in Vietnam.
