The Houshold Cavalry Regiment’s specialist recce force (BRF) have just completed the final, in theatre, stage of their training and are now ready for operations this summer to find and disrupt the insurgent in Helmand. This 100 strong unit, comprised mostly of Household Cavalrymen, also contains Riflemen from the 4 RIFLES, engineers, mechanics, medics, dog handlers and military police. Here are some photos of the BRF conducting Close Quarter Battle training.

Keen-eyed readers may have spotted that since late last year many British troops deployed to Afghanistan or on pre- deployment exercises have been armed with camouflage-painted SA80A2 assault rifles which blend in more with their uniforms than usual. This is not a personal modification but is an official programme using Coyote Brown EC Paint supplied by Viking Arms of Harrogate, who have also supplied the new Glock 17 Generation 4 sidearm to UK MoD (see Greg's feature starting on Page 27 of this issue).

The original SA80 family of weapons, or to use the correct definition the L85/L86, which was manufactured with a black steel receiver and barrel and olive green plastic furniture, did not look too out of place against the old DPM camouflage uniform which included both black and green as two of its four colours. However shortly after the introduction of the new and rather muted Multi-Terrain Pattern uniform in 2010, designed primarily for use in Afghanistan's Helmand Province but now seen as being a pretty effective multi-theatre camouflage, it was noticed that the current generation SA80A2/L85A2 Individual Weapon and the all-black L110A1 Minimi Light Machine Gun both had a tendency to stand out in the same way that black combat boots do.

The simple and cost-effective answer to this camouflage problem is to coat the weapon with a couple of layers of sturdy yet easily removable matt paint in a more compatible colour, which incidentally has the added advantage of making the rifle or machinegun appear less threatening when carried in a civilian environment. The colour selected by the SSP (Soldier Systems Programmes) Lethality Team at DE&S (Defence Equipment & Support) for repainting firearms to blend in with MTP was Coyote Brown, which is possibly easiest described as an earthy khaki shade, and naturally a matt finish was specified.

According to official sources, EC Paint is cleared for use on weapons carried by the dismounted soldier and its use is intended to decrease the likelihood of detection when he or she is wearing MTP uniform. However the paint should only be used on SA80A2 family weapons, the associated L123A1 Under-barrel Grenade Launcher, the L129A1 Sharpshooter Rifle, the L115A3 Sniper Rifle, the M110A2 Minimi LMG, the L7A2 GPMG and the L128A1 Combat Shotgun.

The EC Paint range was developed by the Norwegian NFM Group specifically to meet a requirement from European military units for an easy applicable but removable weapons and equipment camouflage paint in the visual and NIR (Near Infra-Red) spectrum. Suitable for application to metal and plastic surfaces, this ultra scratch resistant paint can be easily sprayed and requires just two coats (applied at a15-minute interval in normal circumstances) to give an even matt finish.

Although primarily issued in 400ml spray cans for personal equipment, this paint is also available in 5 litre containers for vehicle application. A single spray can will provide sufficient coverage to spray two weapons with two coats and UK MoD intends users to paint their own weapons, though Unit Armourers should be involved to ensure that instructions are correctly followed.

It is necessary to mask off moving parts and sights prior to spraying, though the MoD provides technical instructions (AESPs) to assist the soldier in this task. To see just how easy this paint is to apply, we dug out our old SA80A1 photo prop (which currently has a rough representation of an SA80A2 cocking handle fitted) and stripped it down for a repaint - it actually took longer to strip it than to paint it!

When we were invited to the shoot the new UK Forces 9mm Glock 17 pistol at Woolwich in January we were able to photograph a current Op HERRICK configuration SA80A2 demonstrator which had been repainted in Coyote Brown. We have not yet been able to source a down- grip and Picatinny rail fore-end or ACOG sight to turn our prop into a full spec copy, but no doubt some second line troops in Afghanistan will be armed with standard configuration iron sight assault rifles so our replica will not be too wide of the mark.

As for the company, Viking Arms Ltd. is a British distributor which represents some of the world's leading Law Enforcement, Military and Shooting Sports sector manufacturers. Incorporated nearly fifty years ago by the late Geoffrey Brown, the company began as the first UK distributor of Ruger firearms but today its Police & Military Division holds a comprehensive portfolio of some of the world's most innovative, prestigious and reactive manufacturers within the weaponry and accessories field.

Although EC Paints should be available from stores to military personnel deploying on Operation HERRICK, and to more specialist users deploying or potentially deploying operationally elsewhere, spray cans are available for private purchase through four official retailers in the UK; namely G1098supplies.com, RVOps.co.uk, TrojanTactical.com and UkmcPro.co.uk. In addition to the standard issue Coyote Tan, other colours available in 400ml cans for use by those who need to fully camouflage their weapons include Forest Green, Olive Drab, Mud Brown, Sand, Grey, Black and White plus there is also an EC Paint Remover spray to return the weapon to standard configuration at the end of deployment.

1: This soldier on the PASHTUN DAWN 18 pre- deployment FTX carries a painted SA80A2 - normally the rifle furniture would be the same colour as his kneepad

2: Repainted SA80A2 photographed at Woolwich in January - note how the pistol grip, cheekpiece and butt have not been sprayed

3: Essentially only the ACOG sight, barrel, trigger and cocking handle of this theatre specification SA80A2 demonstrator remain black after repainting

Image
4: Our prop SA80A1 (with minor modification to make it look more like an SA80A2) retains its iron sights but we have repainted most of it Coyote Brown

5: I repainted our replica in my back garden on a calm sunny day and allowed 20 minutes between coats - EC Paint must be used in a well ventilated area

6: Component parts of our disassembled prop weapon after its two coats - the matt finish is remarkably consistent even though it was sprayed in pretty basic fashion

7: Jitka tries out the ACOG sight on a painted rifle on the range at Woolwich - the other optical sight normally fitted to current spec SA80A2 rifles is the Lightweight Day Sight
